What reviewers look for
Reviewers read hundreds of statements. They remember applicants who are specific: one real moment, a clear action and a believable plan. They're asking three questions: does this person fit what we fund, will they use the award well, and will they finish?
A simple five-part structure
- Opening moment (2 to 3 sentences): a specific scene from your life connected to what you want to study
- What you did about it: one action, what it took and what changed. Numbers help
- What you learned: a skill or belief that shifted
- Why this scholarship: connect two specific features of the programme to your next step
- Close: where this leaves you, and who benefits from your work
Mistakes that cost applicants
- Starting with a quotation or 'Since I was a child'
- Listing every club and prize instead of explaining one in depth
- Repeating the question in the last paragraph
- Going over the word limit
- Copying a sample from the internet (reviewers notice, and some check)
- Using AI to write it for you: AI can help you structure your own story, but the words and experiences must be yours
Editing checklist
- Every paragraph answers the question asked
- At least one detail only you could have written
- No sentence starts with 'I am passionate about'
- Names of the scholarship and university are spelled correctly
- A second person has read it

Questions
How long should a scholarship essay be?
Follow the word limit exactly. If none is given, 500 to 800 words is usual for undergraduate awards and about 1,000 words for postgraduate statements.
Can I reuse the same essay?
Reuse your stories, not the whole essay. Rewrite the 'why this scholarship' part for each application.
